Purchasing a dehumidifier is in truth a much larger buy decision than persons basi realize. The reason is because dehumidifiers in general cost anyplace amongst $250-$350. The Winix WDH871 70-Pint Dehumidifier is genuinely on the higher end of this range costing around $349.99 if you buy it online and even more if you buy it at a marketing store. But what do you actually get for the money?
Extra Powerful Dehumidification Power Unlike a great deal of of the other home dehumidifiers on the market, the Winix WDH871 70-Pint Dehumidifier may suck up over 50-pints of water a day in areas that have 70% humidity or higher. Some buyers have even claimed to get over 70-pints of water a day in areas that approach 100% on a day-to-day basis. That makes this dehumidifier idealisti for huge basements or for dehumidifying an entire floor.
Energy Efficiency Unfortunately, you are not getting a substantial amount of energy efficacy with this model. Although this dehumidifier is ranked energy star efficient, it hardly passed due to the amount of energy it takes to keep the compressor and fan running at full speed. However, this dehumidifier will stop taking a significant amount of energy if you use it in temperate zones where humidity is only a major problem for the duration of the summer months. Expect to pay up to an extra $5.00 a month in most areas of the United States or potentially even higher in areas where electricity is more costly.
Noise There is also numerous sacrifice in terms of noise that you will have to deal with if you choose to go with the Winix WDH871 70-Pint Dehumidifier. This means it is best to be placed in a basement or closet rather than a bedroom as the hum may keep you up at night. Unfortunately there is some what of a trade off amidst power and noise when it comes to most home dehumidifiers so it is crucial to keep this in mind before picking up this dehumidifier.
Quality For your money, you are getting a reasonable level of quality. The cursed DOA (dead on arrival) is much less likely when you pick up a model in this high price range by a quality manufacturer like Winix. However, you are paying for this luxury. If you do end up getting a bad apple. their warranty is rather inclusive so you must be competent to get a substitute shipped back to you reasonably quickly.
Overall For the cash you are paying, there are in all likelihood better dehumidifiers out there. That’s not to say that this one does not do it’s occupation well. You will get incisively what you suppose out of a dehumidifier if you buy this model, but you are not going to get the extra bells and whistles that are specifically affiliated with dehumidifiers at the high end of the spectrum. This model is not a bad choice if you are at a physical marketing store where they only have one or two dehumidifiers in stock, but you may want to consider picking up a dissimilar model that’s a better bargain if you are buying online.

Very well constructed, reasonably quiet By Surgery100 This unit is identical to the WDH851 with the divergence that one is ranked 70 pints and one 50. The firstborn thing to clarify in regards to that rating, and this applies to all dehumidifiers, is that it refers to the greatest or most complete or best possible amount of water it may remove in 24 hours, not to the size of the tank (which is a reasonably general 2 gallons). I live in DC and have a beach house in Puerto Rico, which remains closed for 2-3 months at a time so keeping humidity in check becomes a regular chore. I’ve had and/or tested around 10 dehumidifiers in the last few years. In popular they all do the job, clear the air of excess humidity, and they do this somewhat effectively. The divergences come in how they do this: 1) how a heap of speed settings they have, 2) may the unit be set to run mechanically to maintain a sure humidity percent, 3) how noisy are they (notice I don’t say how quiet are they, all of them make noise), 4) how are they drained: bucket vs. gravity drain vs. pump 5) how sturdy are they 6) how effortlessly may they be moved from one room to the next (not all wheels are the same)
This unit has 2 fan speed settings. At the high speed this is somewhat loud. I’m not talking Rolling Thunder loud, but not quiet sufficient to keep in a bedroom or to have a quiet speech next to it. I use this setting for when I’m out of the house. The low setting makes a comfortable background white noise similar to an area fan. One of the things I like best regarding this unit is that it has 3 ways to drain the water: 1) manually by carrying a bucket (very solid construction), 2) gravity drain, and 3) it has an included pump that may drain the water up to 15 feet vertically. The unit has an automatic on and off (or sleep mode) depending on the pre-set humidity level. The wheels in this unit work very well. In other units (the Danby 60 pint and the Kenmore 70 pint) the wheels either broke or sagged so much that they were unworthy after a few months.
Compared to the Frigidaire 70-Pint Dehumidifier (FAD704TDP), the Winix is far better. 1) it is better constructed, the wheels are more spectacular and having little impact to roll and the bucket handle feels stronger, 2) it includes a water pump (pump and hose for the Frigidaire add regarding $80-100) 3) it is quieter, peculiarly at the low fan setting

Works like a charm…. By F. Bement The Winix unit works as advertised, and dehumidifies just fine.
I put mine in our creep space, drilled a 1/4″ hole through the wall and ran the hose outside. It appears that I’ll only have to turn it off to clean off the air filter.
Note – you a heap of need to buy an extra long drill bit to get all the way through the wood. Has not one thing to do with the Winix product, but it is a lesson learned.

auto pump feature does not work By andrea k I purchased this dehumidifier and went for the premium price tag because I necessitated a unit that would pump and drain the bucket mechanically (secondary residence, not there to empty bucket). It arrived mid-June, we set it up the following week and left, only to return the following weekend and find the “bucket full” light illuminated. At this point, I contacted Winix in an crusade to troubleshoot and hopefully fix the problem. After a few rounds and emails, Winix offered to have the unit picked up and tested in their facilities and sent a substitute for us to use in the meantime. The alternate pumped, but only sporadically at best. The pump would activate and drain three times, then not work at all. One week we’d find the bucket drained, the next, the light would be on. In amongst we in a literal sense had to suck on the end of the drain hose to prime the pump, after which it would start. After two months of back and forth with Winix (very client friendly, high marks for client service — the product is not good), I thanked the client service rep, but suggested that we call it quits and be permitted to return the unit for a refund. She referred me back to Kitty Hawk Enterprises (apparently an online division of Costco) and said I will have to have no problem getting a refund — that amongst our email communication exchange and confirmation from Winix that we made a valiant crusade to undertake and resolve the problem with the manufacturer, there ought to be no issue at all. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Kitty Hawk refused to bend on the 30-day return and would not even look at the communication exchange or contact Winix to assert all of our efforts. We thought we did the right thing by going to the vendor, but KH informed us that we must have likewise contacted them and would not budge. I spoke with Amazon directly and the agent, who wholly concurred that a credit was in order, initiated an A to Z guarantee claim. But, I just got a message that we were 13 days beyond the time frame for that as well. I am surprised, as I have always found Costco to be very client friendly. This contact was downright hostile and rude — I’m thinking of calling Costco headquarters to relay the story and see what they say. Very unhappy to be out of pocket for over $350 for a product that never worked. Overall, a good dehumidifier, except for the pump. Reading all the other reviews of this and other brands and models with pumps, this seems to be a feature that is notoriously undependable in all makes and models. I am going to undertake the Delonghi and I will buy locally from Best Buy so that I may test it and effortlessly return it if it doesn’t work. A product category as undependable as this one and difficult to ship (requiring time for back and forth that eats up warranty period) is plainly a huge mistake!
