I employed to start out sneezing, sniffling and asthma from mold and mildew exposure (although my allergies likewise included dust, pollen, and pets). Shots at the allergist and medications were a on a weekly basis routine. I begun to experiment with air purifiers and air cleaners of all kinds at age 11. When allergic to mold you’ll undertake anything for relief.
Thirty years of experience has given me a lot of experience with air purifiers and mold problems. The following represent the primary types of air purification, with a quick rating on their effectiveness for mold and mildew allergies.
Electrostatic Plates
An electrostatic machine is fundamentally a machine with positive and negatively charged plates. Oreck may call these plates “Truman Cell” (maybe it stands for Harry Truman??) but they’re most many times called “ionic” or “electrostatic”. Works for pollution since carbon from car exhaust is charged, and they are washable but since most pollen and dust carries little charge nonetheless they are not effective for pollen or dust or mold FOR MOLD & MILDEW ALLERGIES: RATED POOR
HEPA Filters
The 1st choice for allergies like pollen and dust HEPA traps and holds pollen and dust. Allergists commend it most. The downside = you have to replace it each year or so. It will remove mold spores to reduce the disseminate of mold but will not kill mold or mildew. If you include HEPA find lowcost alternate filters as galore companies may soak you after you own their Hepa air purifier. Avoid the highpriced air purifiers like IQAIR ($and Austin Air which are mainly HEPA and forget in regards to them for mold & mildew. They’re over-priced for a HEPA filter, and even though they are well made you may find better mold air purifiers for less than $300. MOLD & MILDEW ALLERGIES: RATED FAIR (removes mold spores only)
Ozone Producing Air Purifier Machines
Ozone, which is isimply Oxygen with an added particle of oxygen (o3), works for odor, mold, and mildew, but is not good for gathering pollen and dust. Too much ozone will irritate the lungs, peculiarly in asthmatics. Ozone machines did little for allergies. Today’s essential Ozone brand is Ecoquest (formerly Alpine). MOLD & MILDEW ALLERGIES: RATED EXCELLENT FOR MOLD AND MILDEW REMOVAL, BUT DANGEROUS TO LUNGS.
Ionizers Air Purifiers
Ionizers put negative ions into the air. Will kill some forms of mildew, pollution, and odor, but not very good for pollen or dust since there is not one thing to gather the pollen in the air. MOLD & MILDEW ALLERGIES: RATED FAIR
Carbon and/or Zeolite
Primarily for smoke, chemicals, odors and fumes since these organic solid homogeneous inorgani substances absorb and trap gases. Not effective in any way for mold or mildew. But they do not trap dust and pollen. MOLD & MILDEW ALLERGIES: RATED POOR
Ultraviolet (UV) Air Purifiers
UV (ultraviolet light) and Tio2 ( Titanium dioxide – nanotechnology) are employed by hospitals and dentists because they kill bacteria, germs, and mold/mildew. UV light has a frequency which kills micro-organisms and accordingly is effective for mold, while Tio2 magnifies UV light up to 1000 times MOLD & MILDEW ALLERGIES: RATED EXCELLENT AND SAFE.
So: Should You Buy A “UV ONLY” AIR PURIFIER?
I would refrain from UV only air purifiers and get a combining of UV, Tio2, HEPA and Ion. That’s because you may find some air purifiers for $200-300 using a combining of these technologies to do an effective occupation on mold and mildew, plus clean the air completely.

It gets the occupation done By BahGoat Pros:
1. It actually turns on. I got this unit after my Crane Adorable Humidifier (Penguin shape) refused to turn on.
2. It just works. I have a 10×13 room and this humidifier took my room’s humidity from 21% to 42% in with regards to 3 hours.
3. I genuinely like the form factor. The unit is only 5.31 inches deep so it may without apparent effort fit on top of a short bookcase that likewise has a little depth. Few other humidifiers would fit where I have this humidifier right now.
4. It is reasonably easy to fill. The top of the tank is flat so that when you turn the tank upsidedown to fill it, it may lie flat.
5. I’m pretty happy with the mist quality. Even on the most eminent setting, you’re not going to see fat droplet sizes coming out. You are not going to end up with a puddle on the floor as long as you put it on a surface at least 2 feet above the floor.
Cons:
1. Some reviewers have complained when it comes to water leaking out of the tank. I noticed that on my unit, the washer (or o-ring) for the tank cap is a little bit too big. If you turn the cap shut too tightly, the o-ring will roll on itself, and the next time you unscrew the cap and screw it back on, the washer may not provide a good seal because it is out of place. Even the manual tells you to make sure the washer is in place when screwing on the cap. As long as the washer is in place, it won’t leak. This is just a slight annoyance.
2. If you are blowing warm mist and you want to modify it back to cool mist, it’ll take awhile for it to become cold again because the unit does not actively cool the water. You’ll have to either pour out the existent warm water in the base or wait until all the warm water in the base gets sent out. I am not a big fan of warm mist so it’s a non-issue.
3. The unit is reasonably quiet and I am finelooking sure most humans may sleep with the unit on without a problem. However, I am an ultra-sensitive sleeper and anything louder than completely silent is too much for me. If it was the just the humming noise, I think I would be capable to take it, but what bothers me the most is the inevitable random water sounds caused by the ultrasonic plate generating big droplets of water and those droplets of water coming back down. Almost each humidifier will do that. The water noise is reasonably low, it is just the randomness of the noise that annoys me when I undertake to sleep. When I am awake and my computer is on, I hardly detect the humidifier because my computer is a heap of times noisier than the humidifier and my computer is already gorgeous quiet.
Tradeoffs:
1. Yes, the tank is only 4 liters, but do you want a humidifier that fits on a bookcase or not?
2. Sure, the tank only last 12 hours on the greatest or most complete or best possible setting, but isn’t that the point of a humidifier? If you desperately want humidity, wouldn’t you want the humidifier to empty the tank as speedily as possible?
Other thoughts:
It is nice that this unit comes with a water filter, but of course the manual will commend that you fill it with distilled water rather than tap water. Considering that I’ll be breathing the water I put into the humidifier, I’ve been filling my tank with water that I’ve passed through a Brita filter in a water pitcher. However, doing that is somewhat a pain because it takes multiple pitchers to fill up the tank. I am thinking regarding getting a faucet filter so that I may fill the tank quickly.
UPDATE: My 10×13 room just hit 50% relative humidity and I’m loving it. My windows are starting to fog up, perchance I will have to turn it off.

Breathing better. By Joshua Speer I got this for my son and it is the best humidifier yet. I’ve tried a bunch of inexpensive ultrasonic, evaporation, and heating element based units but this one is the original that genuinely went ALL night. It has a output volume knob that genuinely works: High is as thick as pea-soup fog and low is plainly mouth breathing. There is a built-in filter on the water supply so that may extend the life a bit but I don’t know yet. The light’s aren’t the super annoying injection laser diodes that I’ve seen on other models. The vapor direction nozzle is nice because you may point the power and water alarm lights away from your bed.

Best one I have used By Zizi I genuinely like this humidifier. Last year I tried to use the “Honeywell HCM-6009 QuietCare 9-Gallon Console Humidifier with Air Washing Technology” and was disgusted by the poor quality of it. The thing started to smell like mildew after one week, so I cleaned the filter and it was okay for only one day. We returned it. The sunpentown humidifier has an ion interchange filter, so it doesn’t smell at all. Plus, it is SILENT!! Even on high, you can not listen it AT ALL. We use it in a huge living room (twice the size of the commended area) and it works just fine. Also, you may genuinely see the mist coming out. In the words of a former reviewer, it in truth is like pea soup. We use it on medium and the water tank lasts for in regards to 12-14 hours. If you use it in a littler room, the low setting would work just fine, so it would last much longer. The reason I only gave it four stars is because when the setting is on high, the water vapor coming out of the humidifier is so thick and heavy that most of it falls to the ground, getting everything damp and wet, and getting less moisture into the air. In fact, even on the medium setting, we have it set up on a countertop to maximize evaporation. This humidifier does not work well when placed on the floor. We have had this humidifier for a few months now, and are very happy with it. Also, it looks very nice. It is not bulky and ugly like other humidifiers.
